WeHo Weighs Longer Meter Hours

Earlier this year, the City of West Hollywood raised parking meter rates from $1.00 to $1.50 per hour--and many of you let me know exactly what you felt about it.  Now, the City is considering extending the hours of operation for the parking meters, and you have a chance to weigh in.

Hoping to raise at least $1 million in new revenues, the City is proposing the following changes:
  • Extend meter operations from 6 PM to 2 AM on meters West of Fairfax
  • Extend meter operations from 6 PM to 10 PM on meters East of Fairfax
  • Add Sunday meter enforcement between 11 AM and 8 PM citywide
The City budget has already appropriated funds from extended meter enforcement in its budget, but that does not mean these longer hours are a done deal.  In the late 1990's a similar proposal was adopted, extending enforcement hours in the Boystown area, but repealed after public outrage.

Personally, this is the kind of money-grab that is unwise during an economic downturn but which is necessitated by the excesses of a City Hall where spending is out-of-control.  West Hollywood residents and visitors should not be on the hook for six-figure salaries and Soho House lunches.

If meter hours are going to be extended, I do not believe Sundays should be treated any different from any other day of the week--on establishment of religion grounds--and that any extension after 6 PM should be matched by a concomitant extension in the number of hours allowed to park at that meter.

But those are my thoughts--I want to hear from YOU.

Now is your chance to speak up.  Please come to Wednesday's Transportation Commission at City Hall at 7 PM or email me to let me know your thoughts.

Term Limits Update

I have joined with a group of West Hollywood residents to circulate an intiative to put Term Limits for the City Council on the March Ballot.  We are fast approaching our deadline to submit the signatures and I'm happy to report that success is in sight!

If you live in West Hollywood and want to sign the petition--or circulate it and get even more signatures--please visit wehotermlimits.com and sign up today!

Join me Sunday for Matt Szabo

On Sunday, September 23, I will be co-hosting an event to support Matt Szabo for LA City Council.  Matt is not only a friend, but perhaps the most-qualified candidate to serve on the Los Angeles City Council that I have seen in years.

Owen Ward, Leor Ram, Sam Borrelli, Christopher Landavazo and I understand that it is important to have a Councilmember in Los Angeles who will develop transportation solutions alongside new buildings, and who has experience balancing the City's troubled finances.  That candidate is Matt Szabo.

Please join us next Sunday afternoon to help Matt make his mark on the future of Los Angeles.

Thanks for your support,
